"56 UP" is 8th installment in a documentary series started 49 years ago
Imagine your life in a bubble since age 7. Every 7 years, cameras returned to capture your life and interview you, revealing your dreams to everyone. You grow up before the world. And now you're 56.
WV PBS brings the eighth film in a series begun 49 years ago in England when a group of 7-year-olds were chosen for this landmark documentary series. "56 UP" will air on POV Monday, Oct. 14, at 10 p.m. on WV PBS.
The children picked for this series of documentaries have been interviewed at ages 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and now 56. The first in the series directed by Michael Apted (Coal Miner’s Daughter, Gorky Park, Gorillas in the Mist) was titled "7 UP" and focused on seven-year-olds from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. By asking 14 children about their lives and their hopes and fears for the future, the filmmakers aimed to explore contemporary English attitudes, especially regarding the class system, as expressed by children. And by following the youngsters as they progressed through life, the “Up” series looked to test the strength of that system and the truth of the Jesuit saying. Was the adult already visible in the seven-year-old?
