West Virginia’s chief elections officer and a federal prosecutor announced they are looking into an possible attempted intrusion into the state’s election system last year. The two officials held a news conference Tuesday to make note of the incident and to promote election security as part of October's designation as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

West Virginia made waves in 2018 when it became the first state in the country to allow some residents to vote using a mobile phone app.

A group encouraging West Virginia voters to reject a constitutional amendment on the Nov. 6 ballot has filed a complaint with Secretary of State Mac Warner. The complaint, rooted in free speech issues and the state’s electioneering laws, comes after an incident Saturday at an early voting location in Morgantown.

A poll worker asked Vote No on Amendment 1 volunteer Stacy North to stay at least 100 feet from the entrance of the Mountaineer Mall early voting location to comply with state law, West Virginia Code Section 3-9-9.

Last Month, more than a thousand West Virginia high school students registered to vote. Secretary of State Mac Warner says he hopes to see even more eligible young voters sign up to vote in November. 

Thirteen high schools across West Virginia conducted voter registration drives in the month of October. Secretary of State Mac Warner said these drives show the, “level of commitment school administrators have for the civic engagement of our youngest voters."

With National Voter Registration Month in September coming just ahead of a statewide special election, the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office is encouraging voters to make sure their registration makes them eligible to head to the polls in early October.
