On October 22, 1977, the New River Gorge Bridge was dedicated in Fayette County before a crowd of 30,000. Throughout history, transportation across the rugged gorge has been a challenge. A bridge built at Fayette Station in 1889 helped considerably. But still, a drive down and back up the winding Fayette Station Road took about 45 minutes. The New River Gorge Bridge would change everything.

Its 1,700-foot arch made it the longest single-span arch bridge in the world.

A nonprofit group is raising money to repair a popular overlook near Grandview National Park.

The Register-Herald of Beckley reports that the Turkey Spur overlook was revamped in 2015, but burned as a result of arson a few months later, destroying most of the improvements.

A group called Friends of the New River Gorge National River is now trying to raise the money locally to use as matching funds in various grant applications that would fund the overlook repairs.

Since the show began almost two years ago, A Change of Tune has highlighted some of the best up-and-coming artists out of these West Virginia hills with podcast-y chats ranging from Jordan Andrew Jefferson to Heavy-Set Paw-Paws, Of the Dell to False Pterodactyl and beyond.

But those interviews have been a bit infrequent, and since West Virginia Day is coming up (not to mention A Change of Tune’s second birthday), we thought we’d do something special: 30 days, 30 brand new #WVmusic interviews that range from Morgantown alt-rockers and Parkersburg singer-songwriters to West Virginia music venues and regional artist management and beyond, all of which contribute to this state’s wild and wonderful music scene.

Bridge Day organizers are re-evaluating a new security plan following protests by BASE jumpers.

The Bridge Day Commission has proposed requiring jumpers, rappellers and vendors to submit to fingerprint scans. The fingerprints would be checked against a terrorism watch list.

Some jumpers say they will skip Bridge Day this year because of the requirement. The jumpers cite privacy concerns.

New River Gorge National River’s Fern Creek Fire that has been burning since Sunday April 20th remains  at 90% contained.  Crews will continue to monitor and mop up the burn. There are still some hot spots and heat within the perimeter of the burn.  Today’s rain will provide a much needed break for the firefighters.  The area will be assessed after the weather breaks and future actions planned accordingly.

The National Park Service at New River Gorge National River reports that rangers at the Glen Jean station have been fighting a fire in the park since Sunday night.
