A health care system serving six southern West Virginia counties received more than $900,000 to enhance its telehealth services.

For the past few months, West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Inside Appalachia Folkways Project has cultivated a connection between two groups of people thousands of miles away — high schools in Lincoln County, West Virginia and in Merthyr Tydfill, Wales.

Several federally funded job-training programs have emerged in recent years designed to help revitalize coal country. In 2017 alone, the Appalachian Regional Commission, a federal-state partnership focused on economic development since the mid-1960s, approved more than $150 million in projects for the region. But how successful are these programs, and what are the challenges?

West Virginia State Police say a trooper was wounded by gunfire after responding to a domestic violence call and a suspect was taken into custody hours later.

The agency said in a statement that Cpl. David Fry was hit in the shoulder and wrist while responding early Tuesday morning to the call at an apartment complex in Lincoln County. The statement says the injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.

On October 14, 1947, Chuck Yeager’s Bell X-1 rocket airplane dropped from the belly of a B-29 bomber. Seconds later, Yeager entered the history books as the first pilot to break the sound barrier.

By this time, the 24-year-old Lincoln County native was already an aviation legend. During World War II, he had flown 64 combat missions over Europe and, in a single dogfight, had killed 13 Germans. In his eighth mission, he had been shot down over German-occupied France.

West Virginians who are out of work due to recent deadly floods are facing a deadline to apply for unemployment benefits.

The deadline to file a claim for employees or residents of Kanawha, Greenbrier and Nicholas counties is Wednesday.

A Lincoln County man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a Florida-to-West Virginia pain pill trafficking scheme.

Thirty-four-year-old Timothy Hallam of Branchland was sentenced last week in federal court in Charleston.

Today marked the ribbon cutting ceremony for a pulmonary rehabilitation center in Lincoln County. Named after Grace Anne Dorney – a COPD patient and wife of longtime Nightline anchor Ted Koppel – the new clinic will provide exercise, education and support to help patients learn to breathe better.

Advocates for the program call it “life changing” and working to open new centers around the state.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, affects more than 10 percent of West Virginians. It is the third leading cause of death in the United States.

Appalachian Power and affiliate AEP West Virginia Transmission Co. are investing $20 million in Cabell and Lincoln counties to improve reliability during the harsh winter months.

The investment in the transmission grid includes a new substation and about 4 miles of transmission line.

Two Hatfield-McCoy Trail System trails in Boone and Lincoln counties are being closed because the trail land has been sold.

The system will lose 200 miles of ATV trails from the closure of the Little Coal River Trail in Boone County and the Ivy Branch Trail in Lincoln County.

Sixteen schools in eight West Virginia counties will share more than $12,200 in grants for sustainability projects.

  A Lincoln County man has been charged in a shooting that left one person dead and another wounded.

Forty-eight-year-old Andrew Staggs faces murder and malicious wounding charges. State Police Capt. Dave Nelson says Staggs shot 29-year-old Katie Toler and 36-year-old Chad Mays, both of Branchland, early Monday. Toler was killed. Mays was in intensive care at CAMC General Hospital.

  The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Bureau for Public Health, along with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, is investigating foam observed on the surface of the Coal River. 

According to a news release from DHHR Friday evening,  intakes at both Lincoln County Public Service District and City of St. Albans water systems have been closed. 

The DHHR says foam samples have been collected by Lincoln PSD and the Department of Environmental Protection. Testing of the samples is ongoing and initial results are expected this evening.

Lincoln County has been awarded more than a million dollars by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to extend clean water services in the county.

The rural development grant completes a multi-million dollar financial package for the Lincoln County project.

Congressman Nick Rahall's office announced the funding yesterday and says the project will serve an additional 81 families in the Lower Mud River area.
