The deputy mayor of Morgantown has been relieved of his teaching duties at West Virginia University after police were called to his home for a noncriminal matter.

The Dominion Post reports Mark Brazaitis has been banned from West Virginia University's campus except for attending prescheduled meetings. A letter from the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Dean R. Gregory Dunaway says Brazaitis must be assessed by the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program to keep his job as an English professor.

A subcommittee designed to listen to public concerns and ideas about the Public Employees Insurance Agency will have four more meetings over the next few days, according to Governor Jim Justice.

 

The public outreach subcommittee for the PEIA Task Force will hold meetings in Wheeling, Weirton, Flatwoods, and Spencer.

Additional federal dollars are coming to West Virginia to help combat the state’s opioid epidemic. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' announcement was used to mark national Overdose Awareness Day.

Shepherd University

The West Virginia Channel will broadcast an energy symposium this weekend that was part of the inauguration of Shepherd University President Mary J.C. Hendrix.

The symposium was held earlier this spring, and it brought together leaders in renewable energy fields to discuss ways a university like Shepherd can strengthen opportunities for West Virginia students to find careers in energy.

Kanawha County's school system is planning to have about 90 fewer positions next fiscal year because of a shrinking budget.

Kanawha County Schools' human resources specialist Kim Olsen tells The Charleston Gazette-Mail there are 52 teacher position cuts planned for next school year, but the cuts have led to only four teachers altogether losing guaranteed jobs next school year.

West Virginia Attorney General's Office

West Virginia’s attorney general is urging state lawmakers to adopt a substance abuse program used in South Dakota.

 

Patrick Morrisey says he sent a letter this week to the chairmen of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees urging them to consider the 24/7 Sobriety Program during the 2016 legislative session.

  Kanawha County Republicans have filed a challenge with the West Virginia Supreme Court to fill an empty House of Delegates ballot slot.

Marie Sprouse-McDavid and the Kanawha County Republican Executive Committee filed the challenge Monday. It targets Secretary of State Natalie Tennant and state Election Commission members.

  The federal Chemical Safety Board is coming to Charleston next week to release findings about a New Cumberland metal recycling plant explosion that killed three workers in December 2010.

The board said Thursday that it also will update the public on its investigation of a January chemical spill at the July 16 meeting. The Freedom Industries tank leak contaminated drinking in the Kanawha Valley for days.

A federal inmate has been convicted on charges of killing another prisoner.

The Exponent Telegram reports that a federal jury in Clarksburg found Kevin Marquette Bellinger guilty of second-degree murder and murder by an inmate serving a life sentence on Monday.

The 33-year-old Bellinger faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. A sentencing date hasn't been set.

Friends and families of victims of a West Virginia mine explosion four years ago are meeting to remember their lost loved ones.
 
A gathering for those affected by the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster will take place Wednesday afternoon in front of the federal courthouse in Charleston. Saturday is the four-year anniversary of the explosion that killed 29 miners.
