One of the most enduring traditions for many families at Christmas is decorating a live tree but one variety of fir found in West Virginia that is a popular Christmas tree is struggling in the wild.

The Canaan fir is a type of Balsam found only in the highlands of West Virginia and Virginia. But many Christmas tree farms in the region also grow Canaan firs.

Merry Xmas!  How many times do you see that during the holidays?  And every time it appears, I hear someone complain that we should not take the Christ out of Christmas!

But putting an X in place of Christ is not sacrilegious at all. In fact, it is an ancient and sacred way to honor both Christ and the early Christian martyrs.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and First Lady Joanne Jaeger Tomblin were joined by hundreds of West Virginians at the Capitol complex to celebrate their annual holiday gathering, 'Joyful Night.'

The evening was full of musical performances, a reading of "Twas the Night Before Christmas," and the lightning of not one, but two Christmas trees.
