Governor Jim Justice has announced an expanded set of business closures in hopes to combat the spread of coronavirus.
At a Wednesday news conference, Justice announced that gyms, health clubs and recreational facilities are being directed to close for two weeks.
That follows an executive order calling for the closure of casinos and for bars and restaurants to be open for carryout only. Justice made that announcement while reporting West Virginia’s first confirmed case of COVID-19.
The governor also asked other business owners to allow as many of their employees to work from home.
He said he’s directed state-level secretaries to only have essential employees come to work and for other public employees to work from home.
Justice said there were 1,200 new claims for unemployment benefits filed Tuesday. He compared that number to 5,300 claims filed in the entire month of February.
