Longtime Democratic state Auditor Glen Gainer says he won’t seek re-election next year.

Gainer told The Associated Press on Monday his decision is partly because of the politicization of government at the state and national levels.

Gainer first won the four-year auditor job in 1992 and was subsequently re-elected.

His father preceded him as auditor from 1977 to 1993.

Gainer says he plans to serve out his final term and wants to see through the completion of the WV OASIS computer data system.

He said he’ll pursue an “exciting” private sector opportunity that he will share publicly later.

Gainer retained his seat after losing a congressional challenge against Republican Rep. David McKinley last year.

Republican state Delegate JB McCuskey has already announced a bid for auditor next year.
