Update: West Virginia Army National Guard Soldier Dies During Training Accident

A West Virginia Army National Guard Soldier assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group in Kingwood has died. 

Sergeant 1st Class Nicholas Sheperty of the West Virginia National Guard was fatally injured during a training exercise in Suffolk, Virginia Wednesday, April 17. According to a press release from the West Virginia National Guard, 36-year-old Sheperty was part of a high-altitude parachute team, was a member of the elite Green Berets and served as a Senior Weapons Sergeant

Sheperty joined the West Virginia Army National Guard in 2010. He previously served with the Marine Corps Special Operations Command and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

An investigation to determine the cause of the accident is ongoing.

A West Virginia Army National Guard Soldier was fatally injured during a training exercise in Suffolk, Virginia Wednesday, according to a press release from the West Virginia National Guard.

The name and unit of the soldier is being withheld until notification of the next of kin has taken place.

An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
