The 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress report shows 35 percent of West Virginia's fourth graders scored at or above the proficient level in math.
While that's up from a score of 31 percent in 2011, it's still below the national average. Nationwide, 42 percent of fourth graders are meeting or exceeding proficiency.
At the same time West Virginia’s eight graders show similar improvements and have similar disparities in scores.
This year 24 percent of the state's eighth graders scored at or above the proficient level in math, up from 21 percent 2 years ago, but much lower than the national average of 35 percent.
Turning to reading, this year 25 percent of eighth graders in the state scored at or above the proficient level, up just one percent from scores in 2011, and 11 percentage points below the national average of 36 percent.
For fourth graders, 27 percent in the state met or exceeded the standard. That's no change from scores 2 years ago, and 8 percent less than the national average of 35 percent.
