Sanders Rallies West Virginians Against GOP Healthcare Reform

Listen

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders held two health care rallies Sunday in Covington, Kentucky and Morgantown, West Virginia, telling attendees to put pressure on their state representatives to vote against the GOP health care plans.

Kara Lofton spoke with Sanders about his visits and what he thinks the proposed legislation would mean for Appalachia.

Last week on Inside Appalachia’s ongoing series, The Struggle to Stay, we met Kyra Soleil-Dawe, a 20-year-old aspiring theater director and playwright who lives in Shepherdstown.

Kyra hopes to make it in West Virginia as a young artist, having started a small theater company called Whiskey Shine and Pantomime Productions in 2014 at age 17. Kyra wants to get the company licensed, and the success or failure of the group plays a pivotal piece in whether Kyra stays or leaves Appalachia.

We left off last time during auditions for Kyra’s production of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Liz McCormick takes us there.
