The West Virginia Healthcare Authority has blocked an Ohio hospital’s bid to establish an ambulatory care facility in Parkersburg.

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports the authority recently denied the Certificate of Need application from Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio, and MHC Physicians Inc.

The hospital wanted to allow Parkersburg Dr. Leah Hopkins to join its medical system and continue to see patients at her Parkersburg office.

The authority says the proposed project isn’t needed and alternatives already exist regarding cost, efficiency and appropriateness.

Authority officials also say the project isn’t consistent with the State Health Plan.

Scott Cantley, president and CEO of the Memorial Health System, said they’re “very disappointed” the authority didn’t approve the application.

He says they’re looking to possibly appeal the authority’s decision.
