The New River Gorge Trail Alliance has received a $140,000 planning grant to help plan a bike trail system in Fayette and Nicholas counties.
The organization says it received the grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission for a feasibility study of a regionally connected bike trail system and expects to spend the next year planning how to build the network.
Trail Alliance President Bill Wells says the idea is to join existing trails such as Tri-Rivers, Meadow River and White Oak into a larger network.
Trail Alliance board member Andy Forron says it's expected that a new network will increase tourism, encourage relocation of professionals, provide new jobs and more.
Forron says it's hoped the group and project partners can create a network of 350 miles or more.
