LISTEN: Take a Tour of One of W.Va.'s Most Successful Furniture Factories

West Virginia Morning
West Virginia Public Broadcasting

On this West Virginia Morning, we hear about organic chicken eggs, a major pipeline project in Pennsylvania, and we take a tour of one of the most successful furniture manufacturers in West Virginia.

If you buy eggs labeled "organic," you might assume that chickens spent some time outdoors. Turns out, that's not the case. An Obama-era rule that would have ensured organic chickens got some fresh air may now be scrapped. The comment period for withdrawal of the rule ends January 17. The Allegheny Front's Julie Grant brings us the story. The Allegheny Front is produced in Pittsburgh and reports on the environment.

A major pipeline project that would ship Marcellus Shale gas from Pennsylvania to New England has suffered a major setback. Federal regulators have upheld a decision by New York state that would block construction of the line. StateImpact Pennsylvania's Susan Phillips reports on how some Pennsylvania landowners have already lost property and trees to the embattled project.

On the campaign trail and in his first State of the State address, Governor Jim Justice talked about the timber industry and boosting furniture manufacturing in West Virginia. One of the most successful furniture manufacturers in the state is in Berkeley Springs. In the final part of our occasional series on the timber and forest products industry in the Mountain State, independent producer Jean Snedegar visited the Gat Creek Furniture factory.
