The Legislature Today: RFRA Makes First Appearance in Senate

The Legislature Today
West Virginia Public Broadcasting

The West Virginia Religious Freedom Restoration Act was approved in the House more than two weeks ago and, in that time, Senate leaders have said little about the bill. The chamber's Judiciary Committee took up the legislation Friday evening, but some Senators say they’re waiting to see a final bill before throwing their support behind it.

The House of Delegates approved a bill Friday to repeal Common Core based education standards and prohibit aligned assessments. After three hours of debate over amendments Thursday, not a single delegate stood to speak to the bill before the vote.

Businesses are calling on lawmakers to approve a bill that would allow the sale of alcohol on Sunday mornings, but leadership in the House says the brunch bill is not a priority.
