After holding out for weeks on making a decision, Gov. Jim Justice said today that schools will be closed for the rest of the year.

The announcement was made at his daily virtual press conference.

He said if state workers are going to continue to work remotely, he can’t in good conscience put school kids back in a building where they’d be concentrated together.

“We need to continue our distance learning, our remote learning, we need to continue to feed our kids and absolutely we need to graduate our seniors and celebrate our accomplishments,” Justice said.

Justice urged schools to schedule in-person graduations sometime over the summer.

Justice said school “definitely” will resume in the fall. State school superintendent Clayton Burch said all advanced placement and career technical students will have the opportunity to finish out those programs and classes remotely.
