A Republican state Senate candidate has called for a recount after losing to a Democratic incumbent by 100 votes.

WDTV-TV reports Republican Frank Cornette II lost to Democrat Sen. Doug Facemire by just 100 votes out of more than 42,300 ballots that were cast.

Harrison County Clerk Susan Thomas said this will be the first recount during her 12 years in office. She said Cornette will cover the costs, which include the salary of poll workers.

Cornette told the station he requested the recount to make sure all votes were correctly counted so that the “proper person is sent to Charleston next year to represent the citizens.”

Republicans have a majority in the state Senate.
