Despite having been barred from marching down Martinsburg's streets, West Virginia's Sons of Confederate Veterans members say they will gather in the city and celebrate Southern heritage and the Confederate flag this weekend.

Paul Williams, commander of the state's division of the group, tells The Journal that his group will be appealing the city council's decision next week, but members will still assemble in Martinsburg on Saturday to celebrate the 155th anniversary of the first official flag of the Confederate States of America.

The group has received permission to fire rifles to salute Southern soldiers.

Confederate symbols have come under increased public scrutiny since the June massacre of nine black worshippers at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The man charged in the shooting had been photographed holding the Confederate battle flag.
