Dog Trapped in Cave For Two Weeks Rescued

A dog is being medically evaluated after her rescue from a water-filled West Virginia cave where she had been trapped for nearly two weeks.

One-year-old pit-bull mix was retrieved from the cave at an abandoned quarry after a Bakerton resident heard its barks. The woman says she had heard the barking for more than 10 days.

The Jefferson County animal control officer ultimately was called in, as well as volunteer firefighters and a swift-water rescue team.

Bakerton Fire Department chief Josh Smith says the dog might have fallen into a sinkhole. Smith says rescuers found the dog at the bottom of a pile of trash and fill.

While the dog was thin and dehydrated, a veterinarian said it was in pretty good shape.
