Consol to Lay Off 100+ Gas Workers in W.Va., Pa.

Consol Energy plans to lay off some 170 natural gas workers at locations in West Virginia and Pennsylvania, according to industry blog Marcellus Drilling News.

The entry, posted Friday, says the lay offs will come in the company's CNX Gas division offices located in Jane Lew and Bluefield, West Virginia, and Waynesburg, Indiana and Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

Multiple requests from West Virginia Public Broadcasting to confirm the number of workers effected were not returned Friday afternoon, but a written statement was provided by the company which said:

"Like many of our peers operating in the Marcellus play, we are evaluating our workforce and taking steps to streamline our organization as the industry is confronted by a potentially sustained period of low commodity prices.  This workforce realignment is intended to ensure that the company remains strong through this challenging environment, and is best positioned to emerge even stronger when the market turns."

MDN reports the 170 workers effected make up about 5 percent of Consol's total workforce.

Calls made to Consol's Jane Lew location Friday went unanswered.
