CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A kindergarten instructional aide in Mercer County has been honored as the state school service personnel employee of the year.

The West Virginia Board of Education announced the award Wednesday for Gail Shrewsbury of Spanishburg Elementary School.

The board says Shrewsbury created a table to improve cafeteria behavior and to reward students who follow the cafeteria rules. She treats those students to a special lunch table with fresh flowers and small surprises bought with her own money.

Shrewsbury was selected from among 33 nominees and will receive $500 from the West Virginia School Service Personnel Association. She has been employed by Mercer County schools for 33 years.

The annual award recognizes aides, bus drivers, cooks, custodians, maintenance and office workers and other employees.
