Participants in a food assistance program can use a smartphone application to identify items they can purchase.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources says the free app will make it easier for participants in the Women, Infants and Children program, or WIC, to shop for groceries.

The DHHR said Thursday in a news release that participants can verify a product’s WIC eligibility by using the app to scan or take a picture of the bar code.

The app can be downloaded from an app store or from EBTShopper.com.

The DHHR says more than more than 45,000 West Virginians receive WIC benefits each month.
