Martinsburg City Council has given preliminary approval to four proposed firearms ordinances designed to bring the city into compliance with a new state law.

The law prohibits municipalities from enacting firearms regulations that are greater than those of the state and federal governments.

The Journal reports that council members approved the first and second readings of two proposals Tuesday. Two others received preliminary approval last week.

One allows concealed-carry permit holders to bring guns onto city-owned property that’s leased to second parties. Another allows permit holders to carry concealed guns at special events.

A third proposal prohibits any weapons on city property where city business is conducted. Another allows lawfully concealed weapons on city-owned property used for recreational purposes.

Final votes on all four proposals are expected May 8.
