West Liberty University is expected to win the conference in both men’s and women’s basketball, in the first season of play in the Mountain East Conference.

In men’s basketball, the three new schools are expected to take the last three spots.

In women’s basketball, the three new schools are expected to take three of the four last spots.

The Mountain East is made up of nine teams formerly of the WVIAC, along with three programs: Notre Dame College in Ohio, Urbana University in Ohio, and University of Virginia-Wise.

“The Mountain East Conference is a conference of guards, very good guards,” said Fairmont State University men’s basketball coach Jarrod Calhoun.

Calhoun expects the men’s portion of the league to be focused on fast-paced offense.

In the women’s league, Notre Dame College head coach Katie Hine says there’s some uncertainty as the team will face new schools.

“It’s just going to be a learning process,” Hine said.
