Morgantown Middle Schoolers Earn Spot at National Science Bowl
A Morgantown middle school will represent West Virginia at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C.
The Suncrest Middle School team won the regional Science Bowl on Saturday. The team competed against eleven others from around the state at West Virginia University. The four eighth-graders and one sixth-grader earned a spot at the national finals in April.
Although teams from Suncrest have had success in the past, this will be the first time these particular students compete at the National Science Bowl. Seventh-grade science teacher and team co-coach Chris Maloney said the students were overjoyed with the win.
“There were a lot of emotions, but overall they were just really, really ecstatic, really excited.”
It was the first time WVU has hosted the middle school competition. Maloney said the university and competition sponsors did an outstanding job.
“I mean it was an amazing experience for the kids and in fact it was as good as, maybe better an experience than even going to the nationals because they did such a great job. And I would just love it if every school in the county and other counties could send a team because I think their kids would have a wonderful time.”
All the winning team members are expected to make it to Washington in April.
