Mon Power has scheduled a power outage on West Virginia University's Evansdale campus.

The Dominion Post reports the power outage begins at 5 a.m. on Saturday will last about 10 hours.

A recent lightning strike damaged the primary distribution grid that provides power to some WVU facilities.

Two colleges in West Virginia will receive federal grants to help students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds succeed in higher education.The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded $23.4 million to more than 100 institutions in 36 states. That's in addition to $270 million for 968 institutions in similar grants announced a month ago.

Shepherd University President Suzanne Shipley came to the school in 2007 after working as Vice President of Academic Affairs at a small university in Baltimore.

Before that, she was a teacher for 20 years at universities in Ohio and then in Arizona, but she says she never imagined working in West Virginia.

Now some 8 years later, Shipley has stepped down from her post to take a new position as president of Midwestern State University in Wichita, Texas.

Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College are banning tobacco use on their shared campus.

Both schools' governing boards have approved adoption of a tobacco-free, smoke-free and vapor-free campus. The Times West Virginian reports that the new policy is effective Aug. 1.

Pierpont Board of Governors chairman James Griffin says the board wanted to create a healthier environment for students.

While the Higher Education Policy Commission is increasing tuition for in-state students at state schools around West Virginia by as much as 10 percent, officials at Salem International University, a private institution, announced a new college affordability initiative this week at their campus in Harrison County. The initiative would effectively cut students’ tuition by half or more.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has approved tuition and fee increases sought by West Virginia University, Potomac State College of WVU and West Virginia State University.

The commission voted on the increases at its regular meeting Monday.

In a news release, the commission said the board voted 5-2 to approve WVU's plan to increase in-state undergraduate tuition and fees by 9.7 percent for the 2015-2016 academic year. Out-of-state undergraduate costs will increase by 4.9 percent.

NASA has awarded $100,000 to a team from West Virginia University for completing a robotics challenge.

  NASA says the objective of the challenge is to encourage innovations in autonomous navigation and robotics technologies. Teams were required to demonstrate their robots could locate and collect geologic samples from wide and varied terrains, operating without human control.

A national report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says West Virginia is one of just three states that has consecutively cut higher education funding in the past two years. The report focused on the cuts state lawmakers approved for colleges and universities across the country after the 2008 economic downturn.

The West Virginia Department of Education is partnering with West Virginia University and the National Institute for Early Education Research to conduct a long term study on early childhood education in the state.

The study will follow a group of three and four-year-olds beginning in West Virginia’s pre-K system this fall through the next five years of their education, tracking their achievement along the way.

West Virginia University President Gordon Gee kicked off a 55-county tour this week with a visit to Mingo and Logan counties. He traveled with doctors and medical students from WVU who were making rounds to a clinic in Gilbert, and then split off to visit other areas of the counties as well.

Davis & Elkins College is officially looking for a new president. After a two-year stint, the current president of the four-year private institution has resigned to accept another job as president of the Appalachian College Association – a non-profit consortium of 35 private four-year colleges and universities.

Members of the search committee at Marshall University tasked with hiring a new president will begin interviewing candidates over the weekend.

The closed door sessions of the search committee begin Saturday and will continue Sunday.

The committee was appointed after the University’s former president, Dr. Stephen Kopp, passed away suddenly in December.

West Liberty University's Faculty Senate has voted no confidence in another administrator.

The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register reports the Faculty Senate approved the no confidence vote in chief financial officer Jack Wright on Wednesday during a closed meeting.

Marshall University is simplifying its tuition and fee structure.

The university Board of Governors on announced the move Wednesday.

Chief Financial Officer Mary Ellen Heuton says Marshall will eliminate all off-campus and regional campus fees and most fees for courses and labs. Instead, fees will be based on their specific degree programs.

A West Liberty University search committee has set a timeline for the process of naming the school's next president.

West Liberty said in a statement Tuesday that the 22-member committee selected university Board of Governors member Leslie DeFelice to lead the search committee.

A direct descendent of the tree that inspired Sir Isaac Newton’s Theory of Gravity has just been planted in Morgantown. It was a gift to retired Sen. Jay Rockefeller by the National Institute of Standards and Technology earlier this month in honor of his science policy leadership during a 30-year career in the United States Senate.

The 21-member committee includes the Board of Governors, members of the university's Foundation Board, and representatives of students, faculty and staff.

Listening Lab Receives $70,000 Less Than Needed

Among the many higher education budget cuts announced this session was a unique program at Marshall that only those who needed the services know about. The Luke Lee Listening Language Learning Lab is dealing with cuts.

50 years ago this month, in March of 1965, armed policemen attacked peaceful civil rights demonstrators attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. The incident became known as Bloody Sunday. 17 marchers were hospitalized and 50 more were treated for injuries.

An African American artist, Jacob Lawrence, depicted a scene on the bridge. That work of art is among the pieces being gifted to West Virginia University’s new art museum in Morgantown.

A West Liberty University researcher has been named the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia's Professor of the Year.


The West Liberty University faculty senate has voted no confidence in President Robin Capehart, who is facing an ethics complaint.
 
The vote Monday was 13-6, according to media reports.
 
The vote follows a complaint in January by the West Virginia Ethics Commission alleging Capehart used university resources to promote his film company's movie "Doughboy."

  The chancellor of West Virginia's community and technical college system is leaving after 11 years on the job.

Chancellor James L. Skidmore announced Thursday he will leave his post on June 30. He was the first chancellor of the system.

Since his start in 2004, Skidmore said he worked to secure a 35 percent increase in community and technical college budgets. He also sought improvements to infrastructure and the creation of two advanced technology centers.

A search committee will be formed to find a successor.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission announced this week that it will be offering free assistance to students and families looking to apply for financial assistance in pursuit of a college degree.

  West Virginia University's purchase of the Mountain State University campus in Beckley has cast a shadow on WVU's Institute of Technology in Montgomery.

The two campuses are approximately 40 miles apart, with 1,200 students attending WVU Tech.

A 2011 state audit found major financial and enrollment problems as well as infrastructure and student life issues at WVU Tech. The latter included a lack of student access to wireless Internet on campus.

Mountain State University's sale of campuses in Beckley and Martinsburg has been approved by a three-judge panel.

The school's Beckley campus has been sold to West Virginia University for $8 million, while its Martinsburg campus is going to a Virginia limited liability company called Viking Way Holdings, according to media reports.

Judges on a mass litigation panel approved the sales on Friday, pending a 30-day appeal period. They postponed a ruling on a larger settlement that would distribute $8.5 million of those sales to as many as 14,000 MSU students.

  The dean is resigning at the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

WVU President Gordon Gee announced Tuesday that Dr. Arthur J. Ross informed him of his decision to leave at the end of June. Gee did not cite a reason for Ross' resignation.

Ross has been in Morgantown for nearly five years. A pediatric surgeon, he came to WVU after serving as dean of Chicago Medical School and as vice president for medical affairs at Rosalind Franklin University.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Marshall University will hold a memorial for President Stephen Kopp, who died suddenly on December 18.
