Marshall University

Former Marshall assistant football coach Red Dawson will be the grand marshal in Marshall University's homecoming parade this month.

The parade will be held Oct. 13 in downtown Huntington.

Dawson was an assistant coach in 1970 when a plane crash carrying Marshall's football team, coaches and supporters crashed near the Huntington airport while returning from a game at East Carolina.

West Virginia State University’s new president. Anthony L. Jenkins gave his first state of the university address Thursday.

Jenkins told faculty, staff and students Thursday that enrollment was up at the historically black university. It’s the fourth consecutive year that enrollment is up according to the university.

Governor Earl Ray Tomblin joined Higher Education Policy Commission Chancellor Paul Hill this morning to administer the oath of office to Marshall University’s new President, Jerome Gilbert.

The ceremony was held on Marshall University’s campus Thursday. Gilbert was named the 37th President of Marshall last October.

The two panels that oversee West Virginia’s higher education institutions responded to a performance review from the Legislative Auditor’s office Monday in an interim meeting with the Joint Standing Committee on Education.

The report was first released in January 2016 and calls for significant changes to the way the two organizations are structured, including urging lawmakers to rethink the amount the agencies are funded each year.

On this West Virginia Morning, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission says too many college students in West Virginia are dropping out.  The agency says students are becoming discouraged when they go to college and are placed in remedial courses to strengthen their basic math and English skills because those classes don’t count for college credit, but students still have to pay for them.

The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission has been a pioneer in helping to develop a national text message counseling program that helps first-time college students transition more easily into college life. This year, that program goes statewide.

After the House of Delegates passed its first measures of the special session Thursday, the slightest sense of progress on the budget has finally arrived. Nine days in and with no revenue measures passed to help cover a $270 million shortfall, the House took its budget bill up on second reading. 

 

All but one of the amendments to the bill were shot down. One set that called for catastrophic cuts to some higher education institutions, eliciting emotional responses.

A new report released by the West Virginia Center on Budget & Policy shows the state’s cuts to Higher Education are among the worst in the country.

The report shows that funding for Higher Education in West Virginia has been cut considerably since the 2007-2008 school year.

A 120 year-old institution will soon be relocating in southern West Virginia after receiving the go-ahead from Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin. 

Tomblin has signed a bill that allows the West Virginia University Institute of Technology to move from Montgomery in Fayette County to Beckley in Raleigh County, taking over the campus of the former Mountain State University.

Marshall University will offer a new bachelor's degree program in health care management.

The university says in a news release that the Lewis College of Business will launch the degree program this fall, although current students can begin taking courses this semester.

Wheeling Jesuit University announced a new program this week that uses novel approaches to make college more affordable for some students, and prepares them more effectively to enter the workforce.

 


West Liberty University

 

West Liberty University is one of several  higher education institutions in the state that have recently hired new presidents. Weirton-native Stephen Greiner spoke with West Virginia Public Broadcasting about coming home to lead a school in the Northern Panhandle.

In Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s State of the State address last week, he proposed budget cuts all across the board, and Higher Education is looking at another big reduction this year.

For years, Higher Education in West Virginia has endured budget reductions from the state legislature. Some representatives from the state’s public universities have voiced concern that lawmakers aren’t taking the cuts and their impacts on the system seriously, and with a proposed 14 million dollar cut by Governor Tomblin again this year, they’re not feeling much better.

West Virginia University and officials for the city of Morgantown have reached an agreement over policing the school's fraternity and sorority houses.

A search committee has been formed to find the next leader at West Virginia State University, and a group of alumni say they have a great prospect.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports that the group of current and former students wants a West Virginia University vice president put on the short list for West Virginia State's next president.

The search is under way for the 11th president of West Virginia State University.

The Board of Governors launched the hunt on Monday after Brian O. Hemphill was named president of Virginia's Radford University. His appointment is effective July 2016.

West Virginia higher education officials want to increase the number of degrees awarded annually in the state to 40,000 by 2025, more than doubling those awarded last year. 

West Virginia's two-year and four-year public colleges and universities awarded a record 18,000 degrees in 2014, but now higher education officials are looking for ways to increase that number to meet future workforce demands.

According to the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, every public college and university in West Virginia costs less to attend than the national average of $17,500. 

However, only 4 schools meet or exceed the national earning power after attending.  Shepherd University, West Virginia University, and two WVU-affiliated schools, (Potomac State College and WVU Institute of Technology) exceed the average national salary of $36,000; salary information was unreported for several state schools.

About a dozen education officials from around the state addressed the Legislative Oversight Commission on Education Accountability in an interim meeting Monday.

Budget cuts for higher education has been a topic many in the state find frustrating, and this feeling was no different at Monday’s interim meeting.

Applications will be available until March 1.

West Liberty University announced the selection of a new president this week. Dr. Stephen Greiner is currently the president of Hazard Community and Technical College in Kentucky, but he will take over as president at West Liberty in January.


Today Concord University is celebrating a new broadcasting facility on its campus. West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Jessica Lilly, a Concord graduate who teaches at the university, spearheaded efforts to get a college radio station up and running.

Some students at New River Community and Technical College who complete two-year degrees can transfer into a four-year program at West Virginia State University.

Officials from both schools announced an agreement Tuesday involving online and evening classes at West Virginia State.

It lets New River graduates in business administration, law enforcement and corrections complete their bachelor's degrees in business or criminal justice.

Marshall University says its accreditation is up for its 10-year review.

According to the university, a team from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools will visit the Huntington campus in October.

The team will review Marshall's ongoing ability to meet the commission's criteria for accreditation.

Marshall University has slashed the price of courses for some high school students who want to earn college credits simultaneously.

The university announced Thursday that students enrolled in the program will now pay $25 per credit hour. Previously they paid $84 per credit hour.

  Marshall University's presidential search committee plans to interview six new candidates in September.

Marshall Board of Governors chairman Michael G. Sellards says the candidates were identified by consultants with AGB Search Inc. He didn't identify the candidates.

The committee interviewed six other candidates in May but decided to continue the search.
