On this West Virginia Morning, the House of Delegates has selected Delegate Roger Hanshaw as the chamber’s new presiding officer. Hanshaw took the podium over the Democrats’ choice, House Minority Leader Tim Miley. Dave Mistich has more on the past two days and the race for speaker.
Also on today's show, West Virginia Public Broadcasting is sponsoring a series of free film screenings of the documentary Recovery Boys, a film about substance use disorder and the latest work of academy award-nominated filmmaker and West Virginian, Elaine Sheldon. A screening is scheduled this 7 p.m. Thursday, at Marshall University. The event is part of WVPB’s Recovery project, a community engagement effort emphasizing that recovery from substance use disorder is possible and help is available. Executive Producer Suzanne Higgins attended a recent screening in Morgantown.
And after nearly 30 years of work the Army Corps of Engineers will partially open a new locks-and-dam system Thursday on the Ohio River between Kentucky and Illinois. As Becca Schimmel reports, ships and barges will be able to start using the Olmsted Locks and Dam in October.
