Larry Groce Remembers Allen Toussaint

Listen

“Allen Toussaint was the most genteel person ever to perform on Mountain Stage. The first time he came, he brought his daughter with him. She was a university student at the time and was just as polite, soft spoken and friendly as he was.

It seems that every cool song you don’t know the writer of was written by Mr. Toussaint, so it’s no surprise that he’s the only guest whose own songs were used for our finale both times he was on. Of course we had to use “Workin’ in a Coal Mine”, and then we used “I Like It Like That” last year when he returned. His importance in the history of American popular music was profound. We were fortunate to have known him.”
